Plant Type: Annual Half-hardy Annual. A wide array of varieties are available in this popular bedding plant that came from the Orient. Single or double blossoms in blue, pink, white, purple, creamy yellow, lavender, purple or red, some with feathery flowerheads. Heights range from 6 inches to 3 feet and the taller varieties may need staking. The blooms take on a wide variety of forms - some like daisies, some like chrysanthemums, some like tight little pompons, some just shaggy. Blooms from late summer to frost and needs regular deadheading to keep those flower buds forming. Prone to wilt disease, virus diseases, foot rot, root rot, and aphids, but don't be discouraged! This lovely flowering annual is worth a little extra effort. Don't plant in the same place twice. Likes sun and a sheltered spot, fertile, sandy, well-drained soil; keep well watered. Seeds may be sown indoors in the fall for spring flowering. Shown: 'Early Bird'. |
