Half-hardy Annual. This annual has been cultivated for many generations. It was a very popular plant in the Victorian period. With intensely fragrant blooms of deep lavender-blue which fade to violet, even today this is a favorite. A lovely companion for marigolds, gomphrena and verbena varieties. Will not do well in a cold or exposed site. Remove the faded flowers to promote new blooms. If grown in a container, your heliotrope will winter easily indoors. In warmer zones, this choice plant will sometimes perennialize and can be grown as an evergreen shrub, blooming through the winter. 'Marine' is the very popular cultivar which is pictured. Dwarf varieties are ideal for patio, tubs and windowboxes.
