Hardy Annual. Each delicate flower is surrounded by a cloud of light green, lacy, finely divided leaflike bracts, on branched plants with fine foliage. Later, each blossom becomes a balloon-like green seedpod, 2-inches long, striped with purple or bronze. The pods be cut and dried and used in dried flower arrangements, while the fresh blossoms look fantastic in flower arrangements. The small black, pungent seeds are said to have been used as a substitute for pepper. Easy to grow and will perform best when fertile, organic matter is dug into soil before planting seeds. Water when dry and fertilize monthly. Deadhead to prolong flowering season. Self seeds readily. Can sow seeds outdoors in spring or early autumn directly in ground; dislikes transplanting. 'Miss Jekyll' is a reliable variety which is pictured. 'Persian Jewels' is a variety which bears blooms colors of rose, blue or white.
