Hardy Annual. This is the most well-known and most commonly grown member of the Salvia family. Its distinctive and striking flower spikes make an excellent accent plant for a summer border or mixed bed. The best use of this flowering annual is combined with a background of evergreens, which brings out its vivid color, but it does not clash with other flowering annuals. Usually bright scarlet red, but this dependable annual blooms for several months, even longer in the South. Colors also available are white, pink, violet, and deep purple. Seeds need light to germinate.
