Plant
Type: Perennial Hardy Perennial. Distinctive heart shaped leathery leaves are thick and glossy and look nice all year with a little grooming now and again. Leaf color is at its best when grown in poor soil and will deepen when temperatures drop. The foliage is as appealing as the flowers. Forms an expanding clump which is vigorous, yet not invasive. Bergenia are prone to slugs, especially in damp places. Cut back if stems get leggy and divide in the spring after flowering if your plants become too crowded. The delicate flowers are less cold-hardy than the leaves. Does really well in many spots where other plants refuse to grow. Two of the most recommended varieties are 'Bressingham White', a large, showy, white-flowering form of Bergenia, while 'Perfect' has a more rounded form and deep pink flowers. |
