Perennial. This is an exotic beauty and a native plant of South Africa. The foliage is quite lovely alone with its large and long dark green leaves, which look like those of the banana tree. Eventually, they grow to form large, lush clumps that are good-looking year-round. The blooms are colored a rich purple with bright orange bracts which appear in a fan pattern. Fertilize twice monthly in the growing season and keep the humidity high. It usually takes 7 years and 7 leaves before blooms will appear, but it is worth the wait. These fine garden plants will need protection from frost in the northern sections of Zone 9. 'Kirstenbosch Gold' is the pictured variety.
