New color televisions do not have instant-on features; however, many of the older color televisions do. The instant-on feature keeps some electricity flowing to the tubes 24 hours a day so it switches on instantly. This wastes a lot of electricity. New solid-state TV's do not require this heat for quick start-up.
Check your old color TV to see if it is instant-on by checking if it feels warm after it has not been switched on for a long while. If it is an old instant-on model, either unplug it when it is not used for a long period or install a switch on the cord.
