To get the most cooling ventilation from windows, open the windows on the windward side less than on the other side. This cause a higher air velocity when the outdoor air blows in and creates a greater cooling effect on your skin. This higher velocity is similar to the way rapids occur in a stream where the stream narrows.
If you are buying new windows, casement designs are best. When they are opened just a little, they tend to catch any breezes and direct them into the house. Get one with hinges on the proper side so that it opens toward the west or south to pick up the summer breezes.
