You can kill two birds with one stone and perhaps a thief along with it. Plant bushes and shrubs with long thorns under your windows. Shrub roses or one of the varieties of Pyracantha are excellent choices. These shrubs will also block the cold winter breezes and the thorns will surprise a would-be thief.
Motion-sensing lights, especially solar-powered ones, are also efficient deterrents to thieves. They do not contribute to excessive light pollution of night sky like high-powered floodlights.
