Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1108

Cover food items in refrigerator

(related column topic links - (660)

Always cover open containers in your refrigerator. This can really reduce how much the compressor runs and your electric bills. When an item is uncovered, it give off moisture to the air that is circulating around inside the refrigerator.

As this water vapor in the air flows past the very cold evaporator coils, it condenses on the coils and may even freeze. Instead of all of the cooling energy going into cooling your refrigerator and freezer, some gets used to condense this water vapor. This requires the compressor to run longer.

Also, uncovered foods lose their flavor and they can make your refrigerator smell bad.
