Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1125

Clean debris off of roof

(related column topic links - 745, 976)

It is important to clean leaves and twigs off of your roof at least twice a year. This type of natural debris will hold moisture and cause the shingles to deteriorate faster than normal. You normally begin to see leaks in the attic under these spots.

Also check around any skylights. The skylight at my own house tends to collect this stuff along the upper edge. I have found in hard rains, that this debris works as a wick and causes a slight leak from the skylight. Carefully clean this area.
