Don't forget to maintain your window and room air conditioners. You can have this professionally done by services like Sears Home Central, but you can also do it yourself in an hour or so. A vinegar solution will help get off some deposits. Wipe off the fan blades too. You cannot check freon pressures because these use sealed refrigerant systems.
