Dulley's Money-Saving Tip #1128

Save water from rinsing dishes and use for watering plants

(related column topic links - 703)

It is early June in Cincinnati, the temperature hit 97 degrees today and there is a drought. In this type of situation, it is important to conserve water and electricity. During the hottest times of the afternoon, with all the air conditioners running, there may be brownouts. Using your dishwasher will only make the problem worse.

Unless you have a full dishwasher load (wait until evening to run it), wash your dishes by hand. Instead of rinsing the suds off of them under the faucet (which is always wasteful), fill a tub with cold water and dip the dishes in the water to rinse them. When you are done with the dishes, you can use the rinse water to water your lawn or outdoor shrubs.
